Flag of French Southern and Antarctic Lands
A blue field with the French tricolour in the canton. In the lower fly is a white monogram of the letters TAAF shaped like an anchor, with five white stars around it.
What the flag means
TAAF stands for Terres australes et antarctiques françaises. The order that adopted the flag gives no meaning for the five stars, which are sometimes linked to the territory's five regions.
History
A flag of almost the same design, with three stars, was made in 1958 for Xavier Richert, the territory's first senior administrator, to use at his office. The five-star version became the official flag of the territory under Order no. 2007-18 of 23 February 2007.
