Flags of the world

How many flags are there in the world?

There are 195 countries with their own national flag: the 193 member states of the United Nations plus Vatican City and Palestine, which have UN observer status. Turn on Show territories to see around 50 more flags in everyday use, from Greenland and Hong Kong to Puerto Rico, along with states that have limited recognition such as Kosovo and Taiwan.

Most national flags are rectangles with a 2:3 or 1:2 shape. The exceptions stand out: Nepal's flag is two stacked pennants, and Switzerland and Vatican City use square flags. On this site every flag is shown in the same 4:3 frame so they're easy to compare.
