Flag families in South America

South America has only twelve countries, and most of their flags are easy to tell apart. The exception is Colombia, Ecuador and Venezuela, which share yellow, blue and red because all three were part of Gran Colombia between 1819 and 1831.

Argentina and Uruguay both show the Sun of May, a golden sun with a face. Paraguay's flag has a different emblem on each side, and Brazil's shows the sky over Rio de Janeiro on 15 November 1889, with the motto 'Ordem e Progresso'.

How to learn them

Learn the Gran Colombia trio together, then the two Sun of May flags. The other seven are distinct enough to learn on their own.

Flags people mix up in this quiz

All three are yellow, blue and red. Colombia's yellow stripe fills the top half. Ecuador uses the same layout with its coat of arms in the centre. Venezuela has three equal stripes and an arc of eight white stars.
