Flag families in Asia

Asia stretches from Turkey to Japan, and its flags are easiest to learn region by region. In West Asia many flags use the Pan-Arab colours of red, white, black and green, and Qatar and Bahrain both have a white band with a zigzag edge next to the flagpole.

Central Asian flags often carry national symbols: Kazakhstan's has a golden sun and a steppe eagle, and Turkmenistan's has a vertical stripe of carpet patterns. Further east are some of the simplest designs in the world, such as Japan's red disc and Indonesia's red and white halves.

How to learn them

Group the flags by region inside Asia: West Asia, Central Asia, South Asia, then East and South-East Asia. Each region has its own look.
