Flag families in North America
North America's flags fall into three groups. Canada, the United States and Mexico each have designs of their own. In Central America, Honduras, Nicaragua, El Salvador and Guatemala keep the blue and white stripes of the Federal Republic of Central America, which existed from 1823 to 1841.
The Caribbean has the widest variety. Most island nations adopted their flags at independence between the 1960s and 1980s, and many used diagonal bands, triangles and stars. Cuba's flag dates from 1902 and has a red triangle with a single white star.
How to learn them
