Flag families in Africa

Green, yellow and red are the most common colours on African flags. They come from the flag of Ethiopia, and Ghana was the first newly independent African country to use them, in 1957. Many countries that became independent in the following years did the same.

A second group uses red, black and green, the colours of Marcus Garvey's Pan-African movement; Kenya and Malawi are examples. In North Africa, Egypt and Sudan use the Pan-Arab red, white, black and green, and Algeria, Tunisia and Libya each carry a crescent and star.

How to learn them

Learn Mali, Senegal, Guinea and Cameroon together. They use the same three colours, and only the order of the stripes and the stars tell them apart.
