Why this is the hardest flag quiz

Most flag quizzes give you three obviously wrong answers. This one doesn't. Every flag here has at least one near-twin somewhere in the world, and the wrong answers are picked from those twins. Expect Chad next to Romania, Monaco next to Indonesia, and all five Nordic crosses side by side.

If you're struggling, read the tips below and study our guide to flags that look alike, then come back. Players who learn the small details (a shade of blue, the order of three stripes, the number of points on a zigzag) beat this quiz quickly.

Flags people mix up in this quiz

Chad and Romania are near-identical blue, yellow and red vertical tricolours; Chad's blue is a darker indigo. Andorra and Moldova use the same colours but add a coat of arms in the centre.

Indonesia and Monaco are both red over white. Only the shape differs: Indonesia's flag is 2:3, Monaco's is 4:5. Poland reverses the order, with white on top.

Both show the Union Jack and the Southern Cross on dark blue. Australia's stars are white, with a large seven-pointed star under the Union Jack. New Zealand has four red stars with white borders.

Ireland is green, white, orange from the flagpole side. Ivory Coast is the mirror image: orange, white, green. Italy swaps the orange for red.

The Netherlands and Luxembourg are red, white and blue stripes; Luxembourg's bottom stripe is a lighter sky blue. Croatia adds a red-and-white chequered shield, and Paraguay adds a round seal.

Russia is plain white, blue and red. Slovakia adds a shield with a white double cross; Slovenia's smaller shield shows a white mountain. Serbia reverses the order to red, blue, white and adds its coat of arms.

Mali is a plain green, yellow, red vertical tricolour. Senegal adds a green star in the middle. Guinea reverses the order to red, yellow, green. Cameroon is green, red, yellow with a yellow star in the centre.

Denmark: white cross on red. Norway: blue cross with a white border on red. Iceland: red cross with a white border on blue. Sweden: yellow cross on blue. Finland: blue cross on white.

  2. Pick how many questions you want: a quick round of 10, or all 74 flags. Turn on the timer if you want to race the clock.
  3. Answer each flag. Get it wrong and we'll show you the right answer and its capital, so you learn as you play.
  4. At the end, review the flags you missed and practise them until they stick.

Want a different challenge? Switch the mode to Find the flag: we show you a country's name and you pick its flag from four options.

Frequently asked questions

What makes this flag quiz hard?

Every flag in it has at least one near-twin, and the wrong answers are chosen from those look-alikes. You can't rely on colours alone: you need to notice stripe order, shades, emblems and stars.

What are the hardest flags to tell apart?

Chad and Romania are the classic pair: the only difference is a slightly darker blue on Chad's flag. Indonesia and Monaco differ only in shape. Ireland and Ivory Coast are mirror images.

Is there an even harder mode?

Switch the difficulty to Expert: you type every answer with no suggestions. Turn on the timer for a real test.
