Flag of Comoros
Four horizontal bands of yellow, white, red and blue, with a green triangle at the hoist. The triangle holds a white crescent and four white five-pointed stars.
What the flag means
The constitution lists the colours without explaining them. The four stripes are usually linked to the four main islands: yellow to Mohéli, white to Mayotte, red to Anjouan and blue to Grande Comore. Mayotte is a French department that the Comoros claims. The four stars also stand for the islands, and the crescent and green are linked with Islam.
History
A green flag with a crescent and four stars was first used in 1963, and the design was changed several times after 1975. The current flag was set out in a new constitution approved by referendum in December 2001 and was adopted on 23 December 2001. It replaced the green flag of 1996, which carried Arabic inscriptions.
The legal texts do not say which way the stars should point, so versions with upward- and outward-pointing stars both exist.
