Flag of Macau
A green field with a white lotus flower above a stylised white bridge and water, under an arc of five gold stars.
What the flag means
The lotus is Macau's floral emblem. The bridge is the Governor Nobre de Carvalho Bridge, linking the Macau Peninsula and Taipa, and the water is Macau's role as a port. The five stars echo the flag of China.
History
The National People's Congress approved the design on 31 March 1993. It is credited to Xiao Hong, a professor of arts and crafts at Henan University. The flag was first used on 20 December 1999. Under the Basic Law the region may use its own flag as well as the national flag of China.
