Flag of Pakistan
A dark green field with a white vertical stripe at the hoist. A white crescent and five-pointed star are in the centre of the green.
What the flag means
The Government of Pakistan says the green stands for the Muslim majority and the white stripe for religious minorities. In the same description, the crescent stands for progress and the star for light and knowledge.
History
The flag grew out of the All-India Muslim League's green banner with a white crescent and star, which Muhammad Ali Jinnah called the national flag of Muslim India in 1940. In 1947 Jinnah turned down a version proposed by Viceroy Louis Mountbatten with the Union Jack in the canton. The Constituent Assembly adopted the design on 11 August 1947, three days before independence. Credit for the design is disputed: Pakistani government pages have named both Jinnah and Syed Amir-uddin Kedwaii.
