Flag of Turkmenistan
A green field with a vertical red stripe near the hoist, holding five carpet guls above two crossed olive branches. A white crescent and five white stars are in the green beside the top of the stripe.
What the flag means
No official explanation has been given for the colours, the crescent or the stars. The five guls are carpet motifs of the five main Turkmen tribes. The olive branches were added in 1997 to mark Turkmenistan's permanent neutrality, which the UN General Assembly recognised on 12 December 1995.
History
Proposed designs were shown at an exhibition in Ashgabat in February 1992, and members of the Supreme Soviet then chose one. The olive branches were added by amendments in January 1997. On 24 January 2001 the proportions changed from 1:2 to 2:3 and the green was made lighter.
