Flag of Mauritius
Four equal horizontal stripes of red, blue, yellow and green, from top to bottom.
What the flag means
The National Flag Act 2015 sets out the meanings. Red is the struggle for freedom and independence, blue the Indian Ocean in which Mauritius lies, yellow the new light of independence, and green the island's agriculture and its greenery all year round.
History
The design was registered at the College of Arms in London on 9 January 1968 and first flown officially on 12 March 1968, when Mauritius became independent. It stayed the same when the country became a republic in 1992. In March 2018 Gurudutt Moher, a retired teacher who had died the previous October, was posthumously made a Member of the Star and Key of the Indian Ocean for designing it.
