Flag of Mayotte
The French tricolour of blue, white and red vertical bands. Mayotte has no flag of its own.
What the flag means
Blue and red come from the colours of Paris. Lafayette called the white the ancient French colour when it was added to the militia cockade.
History
The departmental council flies a white banner with Mayotte's coat of arms and the words 'Département de Mayotte'. The arms were adopted by the General Council on 23 July 1982, devised by Michel Chabin and drawn by Pascale Santerre. They show two ylang-ylang flowers and a crescent, with two seahorses as supporters and the motto 'Ra Hachiri' ('We are vigilant').
On 13 July 2020 the Élysée Palace switched back to a darker navy blue tricolour, replacing the lighter shade introduced in 1974.
