What the flag means

Article 12 of the 1992 constitution says the blue stands for 'the eternal blue sky' and the red for progress and prosperity. The Soyombo was already on the flag of the Bogd Khanate in 1911.

History

Khorloogiin Choibalsan presented the design, drawn by the artist Dodiin Choidog, at a presidium meeting on 10 July 1945, where it was approved. It restored the Soyombo, which the 1940 flag had left out, and put a gold star above it. The design entered the constitution in 1949. The star was removed on 12 February 1992, when the new democratic constitution came into force. A national standard fixed the exact colours in 2011.
