What the flag means

No law gives the colours a meaning. The chairman of the national symbols sub-committee explained them at a press conference on 2 February 1990: red for the people and their heroism, white for peace and unity, green for vegetation and farming, blue for the sky, the Atlantic and water, and the sun for life and energy.

History

A national symbols sub-committee asked the public for designs before independence and drew up the final flag from the entries, keeping the blue, red and green of the SWAPO flag. The Constituent Assembly approved it unanimously on 2 February 1990. It became the national flag at independence on 21 March 1990, replacing the South African flag that had flown over the territory.
