Flag of Republic of the Congo
A yellow band runs diagonally from the lower hoist corner to the upper fly corner. The triangle above it is green and the triangle below is red.
What the flag means
The constitution names the colours without explaining them. The usual explanation is green for the country's farmland and forests and yellow for the friendship and nobility of the people. No meaning is generally given for the red.
History
France had refused the colony a flag of its own. After it became a self-governing republic in November 1958, the Legislative Assembly took up the question, and the flag was adopted in 1959. It was kept at independence on 15 August 1960. The People's Republic of the Congo replaced it with a red flag modelled on the Soviet one. The National Conference that oversaw the return to multiparty politics restored the 1959 flag on 10 June 1991.
