Flag of Réunion
The French tricolour: blue, white and red vertical bands of equal width. Réunion has no separate official flag.
What the flag means
Blue and red are the traditional colours of Paris, linked to Saint Martin and Saint Denis. Accounts from the July Monarchy tie the white to the monarchy.
History
The best-known local flag is Lo Mahavéli, which shows the volcano Piton de la Fournaise with gold sunbeams. Guy Pignolet designed it in 1974 with Jean and Didier Finck, and the Vexillological Association of Réunion chose it in 2003. Since 2014 several town halls, including those of Saint-Denis and Saint-Philippe, have flown it, but it has no official recognition.
Many emoji sets use Lo Mahavéli as the flag of Réunion.
