Flag of Saint Helena, Ascension and Tristan da Cunha

What the flag means

St George's cross stands for England, St Andrew's white saltire for Scotland and St Patrick's red saltire for Ireland. Wales is not shown, because it was part of the Kingdom of England when the first union flag was designed.

History

Saint Helena, Ascension and Tristan da Cunha has no flag of its own as a whole. Each part has its own Blue Ensign with its arms: Saint Helena from 4 October 1984, Tristan da Cunha from 20 October 2002 and Ascension from 11 May 2013. Until then Saint Helena's flag also served Tristan da Cunha and was used unofficially on Ascension.

The present Union Flag dates from 1 January 1801, when St Patrick's saltire was added for Ireland.
