Flag of South Sudan
Horizontal stripes of black, red and green, separated by thin white bands, with a light blue triangle at the hoist holding an upright yellow five-pointed star.
What the flag means
The government gives the meanings: black for the people, red for the blood shed in the struggle for independence, green for the land and its farming potential, white for peace, blue for the waters of the Nile, and the star for the unity of the states.
History
The flag is based on the flag of the Sudan People's Liberation Movement. After the 2005 Comprehensive Peace Agreement it was used by the autonomous Government of Southern Sudan. The cabinet approved it as the national flag on 22 March 2011, and it was raised at independence on 9 July 2011.
On 25 August 2023 the Media Authority ruled that only the version with a light blue triangle and an upright star may be used, ruling out navy and tilted-star versions.
