What the flag means

The 2025 constitutional declaration describes the flag but gives no meanings. When it was introduced in 1930, the three stars stood for the states of Aleppo, Damascus and Deir ez-Zor. The colours are commonly linked to the Rashidun (green), Umayyad (white) and Abbasid (black) caliphates.

History

A committee led by the nationalist Ibrahim Hananu drew up the design, and it became the flag of the Syrian Republic under the French Mandate on 14 May 1930. Syria kept it at independence in 1946, replaced it with the United Arab Republic flag in 1958 and used it again from 1961 to 1963. The opposition took it up in late 2011. After the fall of the Assad government, the caretaker government used it from 8 December 2024, and the constitutional declaration of 13 March 2025 made it the national flag.
