What the flag means

The King Hussein official website links the black, white and green bands to the Abbasid, Umayyad and Fatimid dynasties, and the red triangle to the Hashemite dynasty. It describes the star as the unity of the Arab peoples. The seven points are usually linked to the seven verses of Al-Fatiha, the opening chapter of the Quran.

History

The flag is adapted from the banner of the Arab Revolt of 1916 against the Ottoman Empire. Abdullah, who became ruler of Transjordan in 1921, used a version with the stripes in black, white and green order. Article 3 of the Organic Law of Transjordan, dated 16 April 1928, set out the flag's design, including the star in the red triangle.

The Palestinian flag has the same design without the star.
