Flag of Guernsey

What the flag means

The red cross refers to the island's constitutional relationship with the English Crown. The gold cross is taken from the banner of William the Conqueror and stands for Guernsey's historic link with the Duchy of Normandy.

History

From 1936 Guernsey used the plain St George's cross when an official flag was needed. At the 1982 Commonwealth Games some people thought England had entered two teams. A committee led by Deputy Bailiff Sir Graham Dorey then worked on a new flag. It was unveiled on 15 February 1985 and made official by Royal Warrant on 30 April 1985. It later inspired Alderney's flag of 1993.

On designated flag days, States of Guernsey buildings fly the Union Flag in place of the island flag.
