Flag of Guyana
A green field with a yellow triangle, edged in white, pointing from the hoist to the fly. On top of it is a shorter red triangle edged in black.
What the flag means
The usual explanation is green for farmland and forest, white for rivers and water, gold for mineral wealth, black for endurance, and red for zeal and the work of building the nation.
History
Whitney Smith, an American vexillologist, drew the design for a government competition in 1962. His version had no black or white borders; these were added later. The flag was adopted when British Guiana became independent from the United Kingdom as Guyana on 26 May 1966.
The flag is widely known as the Golden Arrowhead.
