Flag of Kosovo
A blue field with a gold map of Kosovo in the centre and six white five-pointed stars in an arc above it.
What the flag means
Officially, the six stars stand for Kosovo's six main ethnic groups: Albanians, Serbs, Bosniaks, Turks, Romani and Gorani.
History
Under the UN-led talks on Kosovo's status, its symbols had to reflect its many ethnic groups. A competition run by the Kosovo Unity Team in June 2007 drew 993 entries, and the Kosovo Symbols Commission shortlisted three. The Assembly of Kosovo adopted Muhamer Ibrahimi's design on 17 February 2008, the day it declared independence. From 1999 to 2008, under UN administration (UNMIK), the UN flag was used for official purposes.
Its use of a map as the main design is shared only with the flag of Cyprus.
