Flag of Western Sahara
Three horizontal bands of black, white and green, with a red triangle at the hoist. A red crescent and star are in the centre of the white band.
What the flag means
Black is grief for the martyrs, white peace and purity, green the hope of returning to ancestral lands, and red the martyrs' blood. The star marks the state as an Arab republic and the crescent as a Muslim country.
History
This is the flag of the Sahrawi Arab Democratic Republic, declared by the Polisario Front. It was adopted as the SADR's official flag on 27 February 1976. It joins the Pan-Arab colours with the Islamic star and crescent, and its layout is based on the flag of Palestine. It is used in the areas the SADR controls; in the parts of Western Sahara administered by Morocco, the Moroccan flag is used.
