Flag of Morocco
A red field with a green five-pointed star in the centre. The star is drawn as an open outline with one point upward.
What the flag means
No official text explains the colours. Sultan Yusef's decree of 1915 calls the star the seal of Solomon and makes it green to set the flag apart from similar flags flown at sea. Red has old links to the ruling Alawi dynasty and to the sharifs of Mecca.
History
Sultan Yusef introduced the green star by a dahir (royal decree) of 17 November 1915. During the protectorate period the flag could not be used at sea, and ships began flying it after independence in 1956. A law on national symbols and a royal decree of 23 November 2005 restated the design and its measurements.
Under the 2005 rules the star must be woven so that it shows on both sides of the cloth, and each of its lines is one-twentieth as wide as the star is long.
