Flag of Gibraltar
Two horizontal bands, white over red, the white twice as deep. A red three-towered castle stands on the white, with a gold key hanging from it onto the red.
What the flag means
The castle is the fortress of Gibraltar. The key refers to its position: the Moors and the Spanish saw Gibraltar as the key to Spain, and the British later saw it as the key to the Mediterranean.
History
The flag is a banner of the coat of arms granted to Gibraltar by Queen Isabella I of Castile by Royal Warrant on 10 July 1502. It was regularised as the territory's flag on 8 November 1982. It is flown throughout Gibraltar, sometimes officially alongside the Union Flag and the Commonwealth Flag.
It is the only British Overseas Territory flag with no Union Flag in it.
