Flag of Palestine
Three horizontal stripes of black, white and green, with a red triangle at the hoist that reaches one third of the way along the flag.
What the flag means
The colours are those of the 1916 Arab Revolt flag, and each is commonly tied to a historical Arab dynasty: black to the Abbasids, white to the Umayyads, green to the Fatimids and red to the Hashemites.
History
The design is almost the same as the flag of the 1916 Arab Revolt, with the stripes in a different order. Who first designed the Arab Revolt flag is disputed; accounts name Arab nationalist societies in Istanbul and Paris and the British official Mark Sykes. Arab nationalists in Palestine used the flag from the early 1920s. The Palestine Liberation Organization adopted it in 1964, and the State of Palestine declared in 1988 took it as its flag. A 2006 law lengthened the triangle to one third of the flag's length.
