What the flag means

Neither the constitution nor the 1999 flag law explains the design. The Tunisian embassy in France gives red as the blood of the country's martyrs, white as peace and the disc as the sun, with the crescent and star for the unity of Muslims.

History

Hussein II Bey chose the flag after the Tunisian fleet was destroyed at the Battle of Navarino in 1827, because several Muslim states on the southern Mediterranean coast used plain red flags at sea. The Tunisian government dates its adoption to 1831. The 1959 constitution made it the national flag, and Organic Law No. 99-56 of 30 June 1999 fixed its design in detail.
