Flag of Ghana
Three equal horizontal bands of red, gold and green, with a black five-pointed star in the centre of the gold band.
What the flag means
Red is generally explained as the blood of those who died in the struggle for independence, gold as the country's mineral wealth and green as its forests. The black star, the lone star of African freedom, is usually traced to the flag of Marcus Garvey's Black Star Line.
History
Theodosia Okoh, a teacher and artist, designed the flag for independence in 1957, when it replaced the Blue Ensign of the Gold Coast. In 1964 the gold band was changed to white. Following the coup that removed Kwame Nkrumah, the original flag was restored on 28 February 1966.
The black star gave the national football team its nickname, the Black Stars.
