What the flag means

The 1982 Coat of Arms Act sets out the design but gives it no meaning. Blue is commonly explained as the sky and red as the glow of evening fires in homes. The crown, added in 1937, marks the country as a principality.

History

Blue and red replaced an earlier gold and red flag in 1852, and the 1921 constitution made the blue and red bicolour the national flag. At the 1936 Summer Olympics the country found that Haiti's flag was the same. The crown was added on 24 June 1937 to tell the two apart, and the Coat of Arms Act of 30 June 1982 brought in a redrawn version.

When the flag is hung vertically, the crown is turned so that it stays upright.
