What the flag means

The stripes use the Pan-Slavic colours. The three hills are most often read as the Tatra, Fatra and Mátra ranges. The double cross first appeared as a Hungarian royal symbol under Béla III, who reigned from 1172 to 1196.

History

Slovak revolutionaries used flags in white, blue and red in 1848, and the wartime Slovak Republic of 1939 to 1945 had a plain tricolour. The Slovak National Council adopted the plain tricolour again on 1 March 1990. The constitution of September 1992 added the coat of arms, designed by Ladislav Čisárik and Ladislav Vrtel, and the new flag was first raised at Bratislava Castle on 3 September 1992.

The coat of arms was added in 1992 because the plain white, blue and red tricolour could be mistaken for the flag of Russia.
