What the flag means

The constitution describes the flag but gives no meanings, and no official source has published any. The usual explanation is orange for the Sahara in the north, white for the Sahel and green for the fertile south and the Niger River, with the disc as the sun.

History

The flag was designed in 1958 and adopted by Act No. 59-1 of 23 November 1959, shortly before Niger became a republic within the French Community on 18 December 1959. It was kept at independence in 1960 and has not changed since.

Flags are often made in an unusual 6:7 shape, but no law sets that ratio, and the government's own website has shown the flag at 2:3.
