Flag of American Samoa
A dark blue field with a white triangle edged in red, its point at the hoist. On the white is a bald eagle holding a Samoan war club (uatogi) and a fly-whisk (fue).
What the flag means
According to its designers, the eagle shows the tie between the United States and American Samoa. The uatogi and fue show that Samoans can compromise and can also defend themselves. Red, white and blue are traditional colours of the US and of Samoa.
History
Local leaders invited Samoans to send in ideas for a territorial flag. The design is credited to Uinifareti Rapi Sotoa, and local leaders worked out the final version with the US Army Institute of Heraldry. The flag was raised on 17 April 1960, replacing the US flag as the territory's official flag.
A copy of the flag went to the Moon on four Apollo missions between 1969 and 1971.
