Flag of Micronesia
Four white five-pointed stars placed like the points of a compass in the centre of a light blue field.
What the flag means
Section 501 of the FSM Code describes the flag as four white stars in a circle on blue but does not explain it. The common reading is that the blue is the Pacific Ocean and each star is one of the four states: Chuuk, Kosrae, Pohnpei and Yap.
History
The Trust Territory of the Pacific Islands, under United States administration, adopted a flag with six white stars in 1962, and it was approved in 1965. Palau and the Marshall Islands rejected the proposed federal constitution in July 1978. The remaining states took a version with four stars on 30 November 1978, the fourth for Kosrae, which had been separated from Pohnpei.
