Flag of Northern Mariana Islands
A blue field with a white five-pointed star over a grey latte stone, inside a wreath of flowers and leaves.
What the flag means
Blue is the Pacific Ocean and the Mariana Trench. The white star is the United States, the latte stone the Chamorro people, and the wreath (mwarmwar) the Carolinians.
History
The islands used the UN flag from 1947 and the flag of the Trust Territory of the Pacific Islands from 1965 to 1972. A flag of 1972 was unofficial until 1976 and was replaced in 1981. The present design was drawn up in 1985, finalised at the last constitutional convention and adopted through the Second Northern Marianas Constitution on 1 July 1985.
The wreath is made of four plants: ylang-ylang, plumeria, peacock flower and Pacific basil.
