Flag of French Polynesia
Horizontal bands of red, white and red, the white twice as wide. In the centre is a round emblem: a Polynesian canoe in front of a gold sun, above blue and white waves.
What the flag means
The waves are the sea and the gold rays the sun. The canoe's crew of five, drawn as five stars, stands for the five island groups. Red and white are traditional Polynesian colours.
History
Alfred Chalons, a teacher at La Mennais high school, designed the flag with help from his students for a competition. It was presented to the Assembly on 20 November 1984 and adopted three days later under the statute law of 6 September 1984. The red and white bands come from the flag of the Kingdom of Tahiti. It must be flown together with the French tricolour.
