Flag of Cocos (Keeling) Islands
A green field with a yellow Southern Cross in the fly, a palm tree on a yellow disc in the canton, and a yellow crescent in the centre.
What the flag means
The palm tree stands for the islands' plants. The crescent is for Islam, the religion of the Cocos Malays, who are the majority of the population. The Southern Cross refers to Australia and the southern hemisphere, and green and gold are Australia's national colours.
History
Mohammed Minkom, then a teenager, won a design competition held in 2003. Evan Williams, Administrator of the Australian Indian Ocean Territories, formally declared the flag on 6 April 2004. It is used locally, but the Australian Government does not officially recognise the design.
