Flag of New Caledonia
Horizontal bands of blue, red and green, with a yellow disc towards the hoist. On the disc is a black flèche faîtière, the carved spire from the roof of a Kanak house.
What the flag means
Blue is the sky and the Pacific Ocean, red the blood shed by Kanaks in the struggle for independence, and green the land and the ancestors buried in it. The yellow disc is the sun.
History
This is the Kanak flag of the FLNKS independence movement. It flies alongside the French tricolour, the national flag. On 13 July 2010 the Congress of New Caledonia voted a non-binding wish that the two be flown together, and on 17 July 2010 Prime Minister François Fillon raised both for the first time. On 14 February 2025 a Paris appeal court ruled that showing it on driving licences was illegal, as the 2010 resolution had not followed the Nouméa Accord process.
