Flag of Niue
A golden yellow field with the Union Flag in the canton. The Union Flag has a blue disc with a yellow star in the centre and a smaller yellow star on each arm of the cross.
What the flag means
The Niue Flag Act 1975 explains each part. The Union Flag stands for the protection Britain granted in 1900, and the yellow for Niue's sunshine and the warm feelings of Niueans towards New Zealand. The four small stars, the Southern Cross, are the link with New Zealand, and the blue disc the sea.
History
Patricia Rex, wife of Premier Robert Rex, designed the flag. It was adopted under the Niue Flag Act on 15 October 1975. In 2023 flags in colours that did not follow the Act were used at funerals of former MPs, and the government said it would deal with the problem.
A yellow field is very unusual for a flag based on a British ensign.
