Flag of Christmas Island
Divided diagonally into blue (lower hoist) and green (upper fly). The Southern Cross is on the blue, a gold bosun bird on the green, and a green map of the island on a central gold disc.
What the flag means
Green and blue are the land and the sea, and the golden bosun bird is a symbol of the island. The Shire of Christmas Island says the gold disc was first added to set off the green map and has since become linked with mining.
History
In 1986 the Christmas Island Assembly ran a competition for a flag, with a $100 prize. Tony Couch of Sydney won from 69 entries, and the Assembly announced the flag on 14 April 1986. Administrator Bill Taylor declared it official on 26 January 2002. The Australian Government describes it as used in the community but not formally adopted.
