Flag of Aruba
A light blue field with two narrow yellow stripes across the lower half and a red four-pointed star, edged in white, in the upper hoist.
What the flag means
The Aruban government and tourist board explain blue as the sea and yellow as abundance, with the stripes marking Aruba's separate status in the Kingdom of the Netherlands. The star's four points are the compass points, for a people of many origins.
History
A committee formed in January 1976 received 693 entries, looked closely at 157 and shortlisted three. Whitney Smith worked on the final design after one finalist proved hard to manufacture. The flag and the anthem 'Aruba Dushi Tera' were adopted together on 18 March 1976, while Aruba was still part of the Netherlands Antilles. Aruba became a separate country within the Kingdom on 1 January 1986.
Aruba marks 18 March each year as National Anthem and Flag Day, with events across the island.
