Flag of Cayman Islands
A Blue Ensign with the coat of arms in the fly. The shield has a gold lion on red above three green stars on blue and white waves, with a turtle and a pineapple on top.
What the flag means
The three green stars are Grand Cayman, Little Cayman and Cayman Brac, and the waves are the Caribbean Sea. The lion refers to England. The turtle recalls the Spanish name Las Tortugas, and the pineapple the link with Jamaica. The motto, 'He hath founded it upon the seas', comes from Psalm 24:2.
History
The coat of arms was granted on 14 May 1958. A Blue Ensign with the arms on a white disc was adopted in 1959, alongside the Union Flag, replacing the Jamaican colonial flag. In 1999 the disc was removed and the arms were given a white outline.
The National Museum produces the islands' flags. Because the government regards the white-disc version as correct, most new flags still have the disc.
