Flag of Dominica

What the flag means

In the government's explanation, the green is the island's forests and the cross is the Trinity. Yellow is for sunshine, citrus and bananas and the Carib and Arawak peoples, black for the soil and African heritage, and white for clear rivers and waterfalls. The red disc stands for social justice and the ten stars for the ten parishes.

History

The playwright Alwin Bully designed the flag in early 1978, while Dominica prepared for independence from Britain. It was adopted when the country became independent on 3 November 1978. Small changes to the design were made in 1981, 1988 and 1990.

Dominica's is one of the few national flags with purple, in the Sisserou parrot. The parrot is the national bird and is found only on Dominica.
