What the flag means

According to the government, red stands for the courage and energy of the people and their wish for freedom, gold for wisdom and the warmth of Grenadians, and green for the fertile land and its agriculture. The seven stars are the parishes. The nutmeg recalls Grenada's name as the Isle of Spice.

History

Grenada became an associated state on 3 March 1967 and used a blue, yellow and green tricolour with a nutmeg. The search for a national flag began after the 1967 election, won by the Grenada United Labour Party on a call for sovereignty. Anthony C. George of Soubise, in the parish of St Andrew, designed the current flag. It was raised at midnight on 7 February 1974, when Grenada became independent, and kept the nutmeg from the 1967 flag.
