Flag of Guadeloupe
The French tricolour, with equal vertical bands of blue, white and red. Guadeloupe has no other flag with official status.
What the flag means
Article 2 of the French constitution of 1958 names the blue, white and red tricolour as the national emblem. Blue and red are the colours of Paris, tied to Saint Martin and Saint Denis.
History
Several local flags are seen. One, based on the arms of Basse-Terre, shows a yellow sun over green sugar cane, with a blue band of gold fleurs-de-lis; it appeared on a 10-euro collector coin in 2010. The regional council's logo on white is often used as a regional flag. Since 1978 the independence group UPLG has promoted a flag close to Suriname's.
The French Navy flies the tricolour with unequal bands in the ratio 30:33:37, under a regulation of 17 May 1853.
