What the flag means

The government's national symbols page links green to the productive land, yellow to year-round sunshine, black to African heritage and red to the struggle from slavery through colonialism to independence. It calls the two white stars symbols of hope and liberty.

History

Saint Christopher-Nevis-Anguilla used a green, yellow and blue tricolour with a palm tree from 1967. Anguilla's break-away, decided in 1969 and made formal in 1980, left a three-island symbol out of date. A national competition in the early 1980s drew 258 entries, and the winning design was by Edrice Lewis, a student. The flag was first raised one minute after midnight on 19 September 1983, the day of independence.

The layout of the flag is very close to that of the Republic of the Congo.
