Flag of Saint Pierre and Miquelon
The French tricolour of blue, white and red vertical bands. Saint Pierre and Miquelon has no official flag of its own.
What the flag means
The tricolour's blue and red are the colours of Paris, and its white was described by Lafayette as the ancient French colour.
History
A local flag is widely flown: a yellow ship on blue, with the Basque, Breton and Norman flags in a strip at the hoist. André Paturel designed it in the 1980s from the islands' arms. The ship is the Grande Hermine, in which Jacques Cartier reached Saint Pierre on 15 June 1536, and the three flags are the regions most settlers came from. The Territorial Council flies it below the French flag.
Basques often use the Saint Pierre and Miquelon flag emoji online, because the Basque flag has no emoji of its own.
