Flag of Tokelau
A dark blue field with a yellow Tokelauan canoe across the lower half and the four white stars of the Southern Cross towards the hoist.
What the flag means
The Tokelau government says the canoe stands for Tokelau's journey towards the best form of government for its people, and the Southern Cross for the guide used to navigate that journey.
History
Tokelau used the flag of New Zealand until 2009. The General Fono picked a design in June 2007, but it was not adopted after the 2007 self-determination referendum fell short of the required majority. A revised version, with the Southern Cross in place of a map of the islands, was approved by the General Fono in February 2009 and by Queen Elizabeth II in August 2009. The Governor-General presented it on 7 September 2009.
