Flag of Turks and Caicos Islands
A Blue Ensign with a yellow shield in the fly, outlined in white. The shield shows a queen conch shell, a spiny lobster and a Turk's head cactus.
What the flag means
The Turk's head cactus looks like a Turkish fez and gives the islands the first part of their name.
History
The coat of arms was granted on 28 September 1965, and the Blue Ensign with the shield was adopted on 7 November 1968. It replaced a Blue Ensign with an older badge showing a ship, a beach and a man between two salt piles. In 1999 the shield was given a white outline.
An 1889 Admiralty flag book drew the old badge's salt piles with shading and what looked like a door, and some took them for an igloo.
